DDoS attacks during the October 2011 South Korean by-election

The DDoS attacks during the October 2011 South Korean by-election consisted of two Denial-of-service attacks (DDoS) against two websites of the National Election Commission of South Korea and then mayoral candidate Park Won-soon during the October 2011 by-election on October 26th, 2011. Specifically, the attacks were made during the morning, when citizens would look up information as to where to vote. Is has been theorized that less turnout would benefit Mrs. Na, the candidate from the Grand National Party. The National Police Agency later revealed that the secretary of the Grand National Party lawmaker Choi Gu-sik had conducted the two separate DDoS attacks.[1][2] The National Police Agency later arrested the secretary and other four associates.[3]

This has caused a collective panic among GNP members as they are often concerned about online contents generated by South Korean progressives.[4]

There had been doubt that the secretary alone could not plan two huge attacks all by himself.[5] These multiple incidents of online-based sabotage have left many questions. Despite numerous possibilities, the secretary officially insisted that he alone had caused these incidents.[6]

There are allegations that the secretary alone did not do it alone and that an accomplice could possibly work with the secretary.[7][8]

Political Impact

The reformists in the conservative Grand National Party was heavily pressuring against the mainstay members who are closely affiliated to the Lee Myung-bak government. This has brought Park Geun-hye back into the spotlight to reorganize the GNP.[9]

Choi Gu-sik officially resigned his position as a lawmaker.[10]
